using the RSS

After using of Mozilla Thunderbird for reading the RSS, i switched to the use of Attensa Engine + Outlook. The main problem of the Thunderbird is very high memory consumption - when i read RSS it eat about 200 Mb of RAM - this is too many for my notebook with 768 Mb of RAM.
Attensa + Outlook take about 30-40 Mb of RAM.
I also use Outlook as a place for storing my Address Book, Notes, Alarms, etc. And Outlook syncs with my Palm and Nokia phone.
But last time i often thinks about switching back to the use of Emacs + Gnus, both for mail, news and rss. But i need to reread documentation to implement identification of Gnus with certificate

working style

My most comfortable working style is - there are many tasks in different branches, so i can switch between them at any time. But this is too hard to work in this style when you need to make results in some time boundaries.
As example - last week, i did full complect of documentation for project in GOST (russian standart for technical documentation) in one day. I did this - this was about 100 pages with properly formated text with borders, etc. But at that time i didn't want to write documentation - i wanted to write my code, and surf the web in searching the new information about our concurrents and their solution.
After writing 100 pages, i come to home, drink few glasses of wine and went to the bed ;-)

December 14, 2005

I wrote about a half of DansGuardian compatible (in main config only :-) programm in about 2 weeks, working every evening in one-two hours. Usage of good libraries enables me to achieve big productivity.
But my version supports more features - we can use different policies for different directions - upload/download/any and different policies for different times, we can use regexp's anywhere. To make this i changed format of word/url's/extensions/etc. Their only looks like DansGuardian files ;-)/
And main difference - usage of good mime parser to parse http requests and responces, and usage of our new type detection library. This makes our software in the first line of content filtering products.
In near future i plan to make module to communicate with external url reiting systems, like websence, iss, etc.

online services

Last time i try to use different on-line services. Most usefull for me is Google Alerts - i can track what do our concurents, and don't read news every day, because information flow is so big and my brain overloaded with this information. Google Mail is good mail service, and i press 'y' when i need to hide mail in web-mails, other then GMail ;-)
But now i search for good service for making notes, diary, etc. But i cannot find this one, yet ;-)

working

Today i received message, that my department is reformed, and my group go under control of the head of the neighbor group. But he is not understand in the questions of the our works, i cann't accept it as my manager :-(
If my authorities does not accepts my retorts, i'll leave the company, although i like the branch i currently working in. But i must to do this, if i don't want to be bogged down in depression when i stay in my company

Windows and Unix tools

Last half of year i working mostly under Windows. This impact of my current instruments - Sybase PowerDesigner (for UML and database construction), MS Visio to draw different types of diagramms, and MS Word to write high-level project documentation.
But my Unix skills is not wasted - is heavely use GNU Emacs and shell to make my work more comfortable. My fingers remember many commands that i use under Unixes, and i do their automatically without usage of my brain, and before my brain decide that i must to run these commands ;-)
Last version of GNU Emacs (from CVS) run under Windows very well, but exists some annoying things - i use native compiled Emacs with many tools from Cygwin, that does not understand windows style pathes ;-( So i cann't add file to the GNU Arch repository, as it run only under cygwin, but i can use xtla to work with registered files. Also cygwin does not have support for multibyte symbols.
But for other things, this pair of the tools is very usable - i write my current C++ code in Emacs, compile it under cygwin and then merge to the Unix repository. So i can work almost anywhere, as i take my notebook to the home, and when i in the business trip.
